About the Owners-Idle Hour Holidays, Southwest Scotland
Yorkshiremen Anthony and Joseph Duncalf first visited the Galloway area on holiday in 2005, when a planned trip to Croatia had to be cancelled at the last moment. We fell in love with the beautiful countryside and friendly locals, and returned scarcely a month later to buy ourselves a holiday retreat - 'Forest Edge' in Dalbeattie. Over the next two years, we did a lot of work on the house and garden and found ourselves spending more and more time up here. Eventually we decided to move up to Scotland full time, and handed in our notices at our jobs in health and social care, and purchased a property just outside Wigtown, where we ran a small guesthouse for three years, renting out 'Forest Edge' for self-catering holidays. We also purchased a second property - 'Water's Edge' (now re-named 'Tide's Reach') in Garlieston to run as a holiday let. Shortly after this, we decided to move back to the Dalbeattie area, where we now live and run a small gift shop, selling a wide range of unusual gifts, including ceramics, sculptures, handmade skin care products and baby ware. In recent months we have decided to start offering bed and breakfast accommodation in our home on the edge of town, but on a rather smaller scale than before.
We continue to be closely involved in the day-to-day running of the holiday cottages to ensure it is maintained to the highest standards and that we can offer a personalised welcome to our guests.
We can thoroughly recommend the area for those seeking a getaway from the bustle of modern life. With beautiful countryside and coastline and an unhurried pace of life, we feel sure you too will fall in love with Scotland's hidden gem!
