The Local Area-Idle Hour Holidays, Southwest Scotland
The largest town in the Stewartry area of Galloway, Dalbeattie is famous for its high quality granite, which was once exported from its busy Port (traces of which can still be seen by the determined) to build public edifaces throughout the country and beyond. Nowadays, the town is something of a quiet backwater - best known, perhaps, for Dalbeattie Forest, which forms a part of the famous 7-Stanes mountainbiking network, and also offers some great walking opportunities. The town hosts a Walking Festival each August, and also the Folktober music event in October.
Just a short drive from Dalbeattie lie the pretty coastal villages of Kippford and Rockcliffe, offering some lovely views across the Urr Estuary, and beyond. From the cliffs at Castle Point you can look across the Solway to the Cumbrian Hills, and enjoy a scenic walk on to Sandyhills with its expansive beach. A little further along is the small village of Portling, from where you can walk along the coast to the RSPB reserve at Mersehead.
